Benoa Harbour takes superyachts every season. It is Bali’s main commercial port, the recognised port of entry for foreign-flagged yachts, and the closest serious wharf to Ngurah Rai International Airport, the natural stop for clearance, fuel, provisioning and crew change before a Komodo or Raja Ampat leg. Run by Pelindo, Indonesia’s state port operator, Benoa puts a visiting superyacht alongside cruise ships and a working fishing fleet. Most yachts berth at a commercial quay arranged through an agent, not a marina slip.
That character shapes every decision about a Benoa call. Captains expecting finger pontoons and a dockmaster on channel 9 meet a port where berth allocation follows commercial scheduling. Captains who arrive with the berth confirmed and fenders rigged for a ship quay rate Benoa an efficient turnaround port.
A commercial port first, a yacht stop second
Benoa sits between Sanur and Nusa Dua, about half an hour from the airport. The harbour runs a cruise terminal, a fishing fleet, fuel and gas terminals, and fast ferries to Nusa Penida, Lombok and the Gilis, with cargo moving through daily. For a visiting yacht this means noise at most hours, security-controlled gates rather than a marina lobby, and quay space allocated around commercial commitments; a confirmed cruise call can shift your berth window at short notice. It rewards preparation and punishes assumptions.
How superyachts actually berth at Benoa
Alongside on a commercial quay. The standard arrangement above roughly 30 metres is alongside berthing on a hard commercial quay, secured through an agent before arrival. Expect tyre fendering or bare concrete, so bring large fenders and fender boards. Surge from passing traffic argues for doubled lines and a crew watch. Berth duration is agreed in advance, and the port may ask a yacht to shift around commercial movements.
Smaller basins and anchoring. A small marina basin suits day boats and smaller motor yachts; draft rules it out for most superyachts. Many instead combine a short alongside window for fuel and provisioning with time at anchor outside the harbour traffic, or use Serangan to the north, where several operators keep a Bali base. An anchorage embarkation with a tender pickup suits guests who prefer somewhere calmer than a cargo quay.
Why we quote depth and LOA limits case by case
This guide gives no channel depth, no maximum LOA and no berth dimensions. That is deliberate. The approach runs through a dredged channel across shallow flats, depths shift with silting and dredging cycles, and the tidal range around south Bali matters for a deep-draft yacht. Pelindo has also been redeveloping the port in phases, altering quay allocations more than once. A number published online today can be wrong by the time you arrive.
The reliable method every agent uses: send the vessel’s particulars, draft, LOA, beam, tonnage and dates, and have the allocation confirmed against current port information. Our Benoa berth booking desk works this way, coordinating with licensed local agents rather than quoting from a stale spec sheet.
Clearance and formalities
Benoa’s status as a port of entry is a strong card: customs, immigration, quarantine and the harbour master all operate here, so a foreign-flagged yacht clears in without detouring elsewhere. An agent lodges arrival notices, crew and passenger lists and vessel documents ahead of the call. Allow working-day timelines, and flag anything unusual early: firearms in a bonded locker, pets, medical stores, or crew joining and leaving in numbers. Fees scale with tonnage and stay length; ask for a written estimate first.
Fuel, water and dockside services
Bunkering is done by road tanker alongside during your quay window, with quantity and quality checks documented before fuel flows; we run this under a separate fuel bunkering and technical support service. Fresh water should be confirmed and, for drinking, treated or bottled. Shore power at superyacht loads is not something to count on, so plan generator time.
Provisioning is where Bali outperforms most Indonesian stops: markets, importers and cold-chain suppliers sit within an hour, and a galley list sent ahead usually arrives complete, which is why crews staging for weeks in Komodo or Raja Ampat provision here.
What to prepare before you arrive
- Large fenders and fender boards suited to a ship quay, plus chafe gear for doubled lines.
- Vessel particulars sent ahead: LOA, beam, draft, gross tonnage, arrival and departure dates.
- A flexible berth window, with an anchorage fallback if commercial traffic shifts your slot.
- Gate lists for crew, contractors and guests, since port security controls access.
- A guest transfer plan that treats the port gate as a logistics point, not an arrival experience.
Where Benoa fits in an Indonesian itinerary
Treat Benoa as your service and turnaround port: clear in, bunker, provision, change crew, then cruise. Some owners embark guests at Benoa for Nusa Penida, Lombok and Komodo; others keep Benoa purely operational and fly guests to Labuan Bajo to join the yacht. Both patterns work, depending on schedule, guests and season.
If a Bali call is on your route plan, start with the berth booking enquiry and include your vessel particulars and dates. You can also reach the desk on WhatsApp at +62 811-3941-4563 or by email at bd@juaraholding.com. We will come back with a berth plan grounded in current port information, and tell you plainly if the anchorage is the better option for your dates.
